Reporting to the Head of Legal (Direct Investments), and based in our Coleman Street, EC2 head office you will be part of the Group Legal team and will be responsible for providing day-
to-day legal advice and transaction support to the divisions which make up the Legal & General Retirement Institutional Investments (LGRI) team to ensure that LGRI’s interests are as well positioned on Direct Investments and wider Investments and that there has been due compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements as well as the Group's own internal governance procedures.
Direct Investments’ involve transactions which are illiquid in nature and not made through a traded exchange. LGRI direct investments currently include direct investments in the ownership of real property, debt investments across various sectors such as real estate, infrastructure, housing and receivables and with asset classes and jurisdictions for direct investment evolving from time to time including working across the Legal & General group with Legal & General Investment Management and Legal & General Capital to self-
create direct investments where possible.
Your key responsibilities will be to :
Provide legal advice and transaction support to LGRI investments, and in particular to :
assist with the on-going development of L&G processes, reporting and standard form documentation associated with Direct Investments and other LGRI Investments; and
advise on financial services regulatory issues associated with LGRI Investments.
Work with the other Legal and Governance teams, notably Legal & General Investment Management Real Assets to ensure that there is a coherent and seamless delivery of legal advice to the Group.
Assist the Head of Legal (Direct Investments) to identify and report any matters which are of strategic, reputational or material financial value to the Group General Counsel.
Manage external counsel, key stakeholders and other third parties and to ensure business costs are kept to a minimum and manage external legal advice to ensure sound and commercially useful advice is provided to the business.
Ensure there is appropriate horizon scanning of legal regulatory developments and ensure that the Group is advised in a timely and appropriate manner with respect to LGRI Investments.
Co-ordinate with external counsel and internal advisory functions including the arranging of legal education and training.
Whether working independently or as part of a team, you will quickly develop an awareness of what the business is seeking to achieve, and it is essential that you can communicate and influence at a variety of levels, understanding the potential sensitivities of each impact.
Due to the highly strategic nature of this role you will be authoritative, inquisitive, testing and challenging when appropriate.
It is essential that you are a finance lawyer with a strong structured finance and / or broad debt finance expertise, with a minimum of several years' experience, gained in a leading City law firm or in a high profile financial institution, though applications from lawyers with different levels of post qualification experience will be considered.
Experience of debt workouts would be desirable against a backdrop of broad debt experience.
